We are trying to get a handle on exactly what hard enamel, soft enamel and translucent colors are, where they are used, and if there are any guidelines when designing a coin.

Using a pantone chart to pick enamel colors seems to be an accepted method but we see a smaller selections when it comes to translucents. Translucent to us would mean seeing trough the color..? Do they add depth?

Thanks for any help!

What you can use depends on your design, you can use all of them if it's a 2D coin. 3D is a different story and how much the vendor you are working with is willing to push the factory into doing something they don't normally like to do BUT not everything can be done on all coins and it's more of a 'talk to your vendor' or whoever you are working with to help you answer some of these questions. Most coins that people are designing are not technically difficult.

Hard enamel and soft enamels you've seen done on most coins. Hard enamel is flush with the metals, soft is somewhat sunk in. Just depends on what you like in looks. Translucents.... well shoot you've seen enough of those being used. What it does is allows you to see another level of design underneath the translucent enamel. It can also help create certain effects but you're getting into an area that requires a bit more explanation again working with a vendor/designer is your best bet in helping you create the coin you want with the effects you want. It's not always an easy answer.

When choosing colors for you coin, the best thing to have is a chart on hand. Pantone Formula Guide/solid coated 2008 version. This allows you the ability to choose your colors appropriately and as close to the actual color it will appear on the metal. You also have the ability to put the colors together to see how they paly off each other. Keep in mind colors look slightly different on each metal. Haul out your collection and start looking at them.

It's not until someone starts designing a coin do they realize how much work goes into the whole project. Unless you are getting a simple design done with a few colors and allow the designer/vendor to pretty much do most of the work for you.... than you'll want to start exploring your options.

If you are working with the designer now, you'll want to make very clear what effects you are wanting on your coin and if you have a vendor picked out they can also help/guide you as you move along.

If you need a translucent chart to look at let me know and I'll email you some photos but some of the colors that you see are not truly representative (they show up different on metal) knowing this comes with working with someone who knows what they are doing or trial and error with the factory.

Thanks Steph....I kinda figured it was not cut & dried. We found charts on the Web and I have a Pantone color guide. Another factor is picking/using colors on the computer. As in print, what you see on the screen is not necessarily what you get on the printout, or on the coin in this case.
