We often go caching for a whole day and take a picknick with us.

I was wondering what you take on an ordinary day trip for sustenance.

In our backpack we usually pack some
-sandwiches with cheese or salami,
-boiled eggs (salt and pepper for seasoning those eggs),
-carrot sticks or/and cucumber slices,
-apples,
-nut and raisin mix,
-bisquits (cookies) NO chocolate when it is warm, though,
-waterbottles,

In cold weather conditions
-Thermos with potato soup and slices of Frankfurter sausages,
-Thermos with hot tea or drinking chocolate

Sometimes I have some muffins to take along.

What would you take with you?

Curious, ElliPirelli

If we are planning to picnic while caching, we take:

sandwiches (salami and cheese)
Slim Jims (beef jerky sticks)
Diet Coke (gotta have caffeine!)
granola bars (they are pretty surable and don't get smooshed easily)
Jello or pudding cups (sometimes)

Nothing messy, sticky, or drippy...we don't want to attract bears or bees while caching, so we want to make sure we don't get any food debris on our clothing.

Edited to add: if we are just grabbing snacks for Little Whistler to eat in the car, it's granola bars, YoGos, teddy Grahams and bottled water.

Gorp...blah! That makes you thirsty! It's basically a mixture of peanuts, raisins, and whatever else you want to add (seeds, dried fruit, cereal, chocolate chips in the winter, etc.). It's good, but yet not good, if you know what I mean.

Hound, you just wait til Xander starts caching...then you'll see what else you need! Especially if you go out all day like we do.

So it is similar to our nuts and raisin mix? That would be almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, peanuts, cashew (if you take the expensive Mix), raisins and currants.

We would take that as dessert, though. Not agains hunger.

Laughing Yeah, it makes you thirsty, but it's super high in protein and complex carbs to keep you going. It definitely requires extra water so this is better in hilly/mountainous terrain and wetlands. (helps to have a small hiking filter, too) For me, weight is the enemy over distance so I bring the pump and one water bottle and refill as I cross streams/ponds throughout the day.

I know kids require entirely different foods and I'm already packing juice and finger foods (dry stuff like baby puffs/cereal/etc.) for 'Xander. Well, that and diapers...wipes...bottle...binky...salve...powder... Rolling Eyes

Mackey's Gorp:

1 Can mixed nuts w/o peanuts
1 large jar of lightly (or non) salted peanuts
1 bag craisins
1 large box raisings or currants
1 lb. bag chocolate & peanut butter chips (baking aisle)
1 lb. box/bag of granola or granola based cerial

optional:
1 bag blueberries
1 bag toasted soy nuts
1 bag shelled sunflower seeds
1 bag bannan chips

Pros: shelf life of a hammer, lightweight, kids love it, can be eaten on the go without messy hands (unless you're hiking in the rain), short burst of sugar (chips & sucrose from fruit) followed by long mileage of complex carbs & protein from nuts/soy, seldom upsets anybody's tummy.

Cons: depending on how you mix can have high salt content, need extra water to compensate for dehydrated goods, bad in the rain, bad in the car if you have kids (you'll be vacuuming it up later).

I don't think our streams and rivers are that clean, that I'd like to drink that water... (yuck!) Even with a filter... I always carry one or two sigg bottles, (aluminium bottles and unbreakable).

At least I'm lucky enough that my preteens are carrying their own waterbottles and food! Very Happy

Well I shouldn't say preteens anymore, in just 2 short weeks my daughter will be an teenager. She's already trying out the moodiness and tandrums.... Evil or Very Mad

You might be surprised. I've refilled water bottles from a swamp and even mud puddles! Check out their stats... http://products.katadyn.com/brands-and-products/produkte/Endurance_Series_23/Katadyn_Pocket_22.html

Promises, promises.

You're more than welcome to come to Kassel.
We have in a radius of 50km around the city centre around 2700 Caches. So there's more than enough to do and take a picknick too! Very Happy

We take one time grills (a little foil tray with charcoal and a small grate), hot dogs, bread, potato sallad, drinks, chips, and nuts with us, along with water, lots and lots of water! Chocolate us usually a dessert, for a couple of reasons, carbs, nutrition, etc.

Sometimes we take just bread, butter and cheese, other things other times. It just depends on our mood and finances Smile
