Here is the preliminary artwork for three new coin designs I am working on. I don't have the funds to launch all three projects at once, so I am trying to gauge interest in the designs to see which one to run with.

Geocaching Widow geocoin

I've shown the artwork for this one before on the GC forums. It seemed to get a lot of interest, despite being non-trackable.

Night Caching in Canada geocoin

This one is obviously a 'niche' coin -- not everyone likes night caching, and even fewer of them would be from Canada. But when I thought of using this iconic Canadian logo, I just had to do it up and see what kind of reaction it got.

The Oak Island geocoin celebrates Nova Scotia's original mystery cache. 213 years of DNFs and counting!

PS: As a fourth option, I am designing a personal coin. But I want to keep that one under wraps until I am satisfied with it.

Of course I like the Night Caching in Canada but I had to chose your personal coin. I tend to like the personal coins better and I'm sure yours will turn out great.

I think the Widow coin is going to be the most popular, but I'll wait until I see the other side. I don't like looking at only one side for a decision - ever. I think it's one of the Achilese heals of geocoins that designers seldom consider both sides of a coin while designing. I'm not lumping you in, but I have seen this kind of poll before Wink

I think the Pit is the best idea for a geocoin, but the design leaves much to be desired so far. I think the potential is much better than the others though if it's fleshed out well.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how it progresses though, keep us updated! Very Happy

I totally agree! And believe me, coming up with the second side and being satisfied with it is proving difficult.

The pictures in this thread are rather small and don't show much detail. You don't need that for the first two coins, but the Oak Island coin does look kind of plain at this resolution. If you follow the link in my post, you can find a much larger pic. I tried to make it look like an old map and add both the true coordinates of the Pit and the cryptic riddle supposedly left by Captain Kidd.

Do you think it is too plain, or do you just not like the whole map concept?

I just think the simple map is maybe a bit too simple. In this day and age there are countless versions of that island map available I'm sure. Maybe a detailed topographical map of just the immediate vicinity with an overlay image of the island itself? Maybe a good 3d photo conversion of some of the original site-dig photos? Any blueprints/photos/recordings of the early dig efforts? A project this big always leaves stuff behind. Maybe a compilation of tools or engineered scaffolding, etc? I pulled 64,000+ hits in google images for that island. Just need to examine a bit closer and see what's available Smile

If you want to go with the island, why not do a full-blown nautical relief map with the island in 3d and the water as a transblue enamel?

I´m more into shaped coins and these are not in my taste. Maybe the personalcoin can be, but I would have to see that first. But they are all nice coins for the right collection, just not some I would buy. Of course I would keep them if they were gifted to me, I almost always do that.

I voted earlier but got knocked offline before I could leave a post, sorry.

These look lovely coins for the right collector, but they're just not for me.....so it's purely personal preference that made me tick option 5. I'm sure other collectors will love them though....I would imagine that the "Geocaching Widow" design will be very popular.......because there's bound to be a few of them out there! Smile

Well, after throwing some ideas back and forth with Chris Mackey, I've come up with a different design for the Oak Island coin. It incorporates translucent enamel over a navigational chart of Mahone Bay. The location of Oak Island is highlighted, but does not dominate the design.

I'm still keeping that under wraps for the moment. Apparently, more people would rather see a personal coin -- sight unseen! -- than one of my other designs Razz

hint: my personal coin will incorporate my little Cthulhu avatar seen to the left here somewhere in the design.

I'm going with the Oak Island coin since that has generated a lot of local interest. 3Geeks will be doing all the heavy lifting and I'll get a few coins in an AE edition.

I'll keep ya posted on the progress.
