Is there any chance, oh Professor G., that an option to see if someone read the PM you sent them could be added to the PM system?

Sorry to have to tell you that there is no option available to determine if PM's have been read.
The only options available with regard to PM's is to have them enabled or disabled. I figured most folk would want this option to be enabled. It isn't always immediately clear if a message has been received unless the recipient has turned on email notification in their profile.
If your message is important, I can only suggest that you follow it up with an email. |

Actually there is a way 
When you send a PM, it shows up in your 'Outbox', and once it is read by the recipient it gets moved to the 'Sentbox'. So if you still have messages in your Outbox, they haven't been read yet.  |
